My sons' room
I am buying a lightly distressed navy blue bunk bed for my sons to share, but the dresser I have is white, not distressed. Would this look ok or how should I tie them together?

carole bleu and white always go together,i dont think it is a problem i the finishes are not the same, maybe mix in another color to the room, wooden stools or multicolored bedding, were you thinking of making a themed room??

bihamer I don't really like themed rooms, I have a great rug that has blue, orange and off white that I want to use the color palette from. I was thinking if buying a white bed to match the dresser but everyone thinks white is more feminine and would show marks more easily.

orangecamera I like your color scheme. You can always distress the dresser...or paint it blue, or orange. Have fun with color! How old are your sons?

sam0705 I think they will look fine together. It sounds like with your rug it will tie together. How old are your sons? Can you add a white desk or play table if you want to add some more white.

Darzy It will look fine. Just put a blue wooden "distressed" lamp (with a white shade) on the dresser and it will tie the two together. Are the bunk beds metal or wood?

Jill J. Wallace Agreed blue bunks may look more masculine. It depends a bit if the beds are clean lines or curvy. A white dresser will help keeps things not matchy. Maybe you could pull orange into accessories (lamp, pillows) or on one wall (behind the dresser vs. a solid wall)? Definitely don't need a theme to coordinate the two furniture pieces. Depending on the age of the occupants it is easier to change out pictures and accessories as they grow. Good luck!

bihamer Wow! All great comments. This is the rug. Do you think navy blue is the right choice for the bed or white? Hmm. My boys are almost 4 and 1. Obviously the baby is still in the crib and won't be in a big boy bed for awhile.

bihamer I should add the bunks can be taken apart and made into two separate twin beds.

orangecamera I like that rug a lot for their room. I can picture your boys using it to build a Lego (Duplo?) neighborhood, and using the lines as roads for their Matchbox cars.

sam0705 What is your overall style? I am loving the rug but I am getting a more modern vibe in my head than distressed furniture. I love two tone espresso and white (or birch and white) but I'm biased because that's what I have in my kids' rooms. I only throw this out there because your follow up comment seemed like the bed decision is not final.

bihamer The bed is final just the color I was iffy on. My style is between traditional and transitional I would say. I like modern lines and style but also very traditional pieces. My house now is a very traditional style house so I think modern would look out of place.

bihamer This is the white dresser. Excuse the overflowing hamper. Lol!

sam0705 I disagree that the white is feminine if the style is like the dresser so if that's your main reason for choosing the blue my personal preference would be the bed in white. You could always add fun blue accent chairs around a play table or some other blue accessories.

Jill J. Wallace On seeing the dresser, my suggestion is to determine if the bed will be the same white as the dresser. Blue might be an easier (?) answer. The rug is great! You could use navy and denim and rusty oranges for bedding, etc. Carole's pics in beginning show the nice weight of blue. Trust your gut, initial feel as we all offer our advice.

bihamer Good point Jill. I forgot that mismatched whites could look bad too. The rug is really great and gives me a lot of design options. Everyone's feedback has been so helpful. I think I am going to stick with the navy blue. Now to distress or not to distress. Haha

orangecamera If you go for non-distressed, and you'll be upset if your boys "distress" it for you...you might as well start with distressed. What color bedding are you going to use?

bihamer Good point. I bought a duvet set at Ikea. It is blue and white stripes. Then I thought I would buy some accent colors with orange and blue. Any other suggestions?

orangecamera Even though your younger son isn't in a bed yet, you might want to get the matching duvet set for his bed now...because in a year it probably won't be available.

I had two sons who shared a small bedroom with bunk beds. Their comforter colors were blue and green. One son had blue accessories, the other had green. Things like sheets, towels, toothbrushes, hair brushes.
