Our home's entry need help!
We've lived here 3yrs and I have so much decorating to do....help! It is so hard doing my own house....ugh! My entry is open to the 2nd floor and opens up into the living area and the dining room is adjacent. I'd really like a neutral gray throughout the house. I can't tell you how many times I've painted samples on the walls only to get frustrated and paint over with the builder white color. I just can't get my groove going on this house.

Carolina Photo To Go LLC Look at the photos on HOUZZ of different rooms. Most of the most fabulous ones use a neutral background of a light paint and have the accessories either neutral or with pops of color. Perhaps you can add color via wall hangings either photography or paintings. High definition photography is so realistic and uplifting too.

You have a beautiful home by the way!!

decoenthusiaste Just get one room right and you'll start to get on a roll. Try the dining room since you've already started there. Find an area rug to put under the table and chairs and use the colors from it to theme the paint. Rug will need to be 4 feet larger than the table. Your chandy looks too small. It should be 1/2 the width of the table. Plantations look great, just add panels to soften. Think about painting the ceiling a pretty pale blue. You could use some can lighting in the soffit around the room. If your buffet will fit on the end wall it will draw the eye from the entry through the room. I would only use a mirror if it reflected a stunning chandelier. Right now the mirror is too high and it would look better if hung vertically. You might think about taking a greige throughout your home. If will warm, yet stay neutral. As for the foyer niche, find a striking painting just the size, with a beautiful frame, to fit inside the area.
Meanwhile, you could fill it as the one below.

Digital Imaging by Tina - Interior Designer Your home is gorgeous; this should be fun to decorate. I’d paint this room (dining area) a dramatic faux grey color giving it personality. I’d add some nice art decorations to the adjacent wall. I see the door with the blinds; this door would have drapes that would hang from the top (below the small window) to the floor...(see photo). I offer digital imaging of your homes interior decorating before you even spend a dime on paint, furnishing and decorations. Buy using this image, you will be more equipt on the directions you need to take. HouZZ. "Digital Imaging by Tina"

sherryheri Thanks for the comments. Keep them coming! I'm really looking for specifics....such as paint color, etc. I search Houzz all the time for inspiration, but get overwhelmed...and side tracked. In the entry niche, most people (I live in a subd where many people have the same floor plan) hang a picture. I like that idea but Im also looking for other ideas to set ourselves apart from everyone else. I'm so lost and notorious for moving forward on projects without a plan. I really need to get the space planned out before I move forward with buying items.

sherryheri Thank you! It's got a long way to go. Unfortunately, I'm not loving my house. An undecorated house is really bothering me.

Photo Patron Hey Sherry,

I wanted to follow-up on Carolina's suggestion and introduce myself. If you're interested in high resolution photography, I just founded a grass roots organization to assist emerging photographers in the San Francisco Bay Area. We have a number of gorgeous photographs within the gallery, the prints are affordable, limited editions that are archival museum quality. You would be directly supporting individual artists. If you're interested, the gallery is photopatron.com.

Thank you for your consideration and good luck with your decorating!

All the Best,

Patrick Philbin

Keitha Just wondering the color of your dining chairs? From the photo they look as if they are a little salmon in color but that might be a neutral beige... Hard to tell from the photo. If you want to use gray on the walls I'm attaching some photos for color inspiration. I suggest searching for an interesting old architectural fragment to go in the niche.

Barbara Griffith Designs DO NOT START with a paint color for the entry/foyer. I always tell people choose paint color last. Then it will be easy. And never paint a patch on the wall. Always paint an entire poster board 2 coats then tape it to each wall & ceiling because I always paint the ceiling a color. Now, first, in the dining room, you have a scale problem. The chandelier is too small because the chairs are so heavy, so yes I would find another larger one for the dining room, the current one would look great in a powder room. Before you look for that rug, add a leaf or 2 to the table because the chairs overwhelm the table it needs to be larger. After you do that, look for that rug, make it colorful & with a great pattern, you need to purchase the rug before anything else. Work each room then choose your paint colors and the foyer/entry may be different than you think now.

LB Interiors I like decoenthusiaste. Adding in the niche, this possibility, Metal sculptural art. Adds dimension, color and silver to your gray walls.
