Kitchen update
We just bought a lovely home in the PNW. While nothing NEEDS to be done we have the funds to make it our own. The kitchen currently has P-lam counter (YIKES!) We are considering soapstone as the cabinets are VERY light wood. Do you think soapstone has staying power or is it too specific and may not have a broad appeal? We will also be updating the lighting, sinks, faucets & appliances. We have modern/contemporary taste. I LOVE to cook so a pro-style range would be my preference. Would LOVE your thoughts

Kaplan Architects, AIA I think stainless steel might look better for the appliances with the lighter cabinets than the black. I'll differ to others on the soapstone. I think it might be too soft and require care when using it in a kitchen environment...

Carolyn Albert-Kincl Design Soapstone is well thought of here in Austin, but I'll await reviews from actual users of it. As you are planning new countertops, on your island I would definitely expand the island toward the camera as far as possible, perhaps with a full half circle shape at this end.

To go with the black appliances, you could paint the lower wall cabinets black, and replace the microwave in the upper cabinets with a stainless steel unit. The soapstone countertop you want will help eliminate the problem with the cooktop contrasting so much with the current countertop.
