Need help for my small living room.
Looking to add some elegance and pizzazz to my living room. Hate my drapes. Don't know how to dress the windows. Any suggestions.

groveraxle I think your room looks great! I like the style of your drapes, but think the color is off. Also, I wouldn't puddle them. I would hang either something with a bit of teal like your lamps or something simple and neutral.

cypress I would replace your drapes with neutral colored ones, and hang them as high as possible. Also for some "elegance", replace your ottomans with a glass coffee table.

gcarb1 Thank you for our comments. Neutral drapes is a great suggestion and I love the idea of a little teal, can't have glass coffee table right now because of the grandkids. Thanks so much.

cwalbrun19 I agree, neutral draps would be very elegant, especially if they have some sheen. I think the room looks great! An accent chair with bold colors would be fab if you could find or recover one to go with some of the colors you've already got.

Barbara Griffith Designs Agree, neutral drapes hung high..simple, also they need to be further off the windows and spread out a little you may need a double width. Paint the back wall of the TV area the rust?? color of the rug. Also, the room lacks pattern. Pillows on sofa are good colors, but need to be patterned fabrics. Regarding the ottomans, frankly I think you need them because every table is leggy and the bench is leggy, you need some solid items for balance with the big wall unit. Larger art. And what is the little throw on the sofa..remove it.

Carolyn Albert-Kincl Design You've done some nice things with your room. I particularly like the rug and the lamps. You also have a nice sofa and chair. Here's what I would change: I would keep the orange pillows and the blue one but remove the others and then acquire a white Mongolian lamb pillow for textural interest. . I like cypress' idea of a glass coffee table. The one below might work.

Unless there is a lot more space than what we are seeing in the living room, I think you need to get rid of either the bench or the round ottoman. Then you'll have the sofa, end tables, coffee table and chair. Perhaps the round table that is next to the bench can move over by the chair so that the person sitting there has a handy place to put a drink.

Your artwork needs more ummph and more color! It also needs to be lowered so that it starts about 6-8" above the chair rail, which by the way, you could consider eliminating. I would look for vertical pieces of art, or two pieces that when stacked one above the other create a vertical form. On one side of the sofa could be the two pictures and on the other side a single vertical piece.

ASVInteriors I really like your use of colour. They go very nicely together. Some very good ideas have already been put forward for your curtains (although if you want to be daring, you could go for a very muted version of the rust on your carpet). I think you have a low-key approach to patterns and I would stick with it.
I would favour leaving the back of your TV cabinet black, it makes the TV less of a feature, and lends some gravitas to this room. One day you may have to deal with the poufs, and the bench. But they work for now and kudos to you.
However, if you cannot have a glass coffee table why not a perspex one?

Carolyn Albert-Kincl Design gcarb1, my apologies for not having noticed that you could not use a glass top coffee table. Here's a nice one from West Elm with a wooden top that might work better for you.

decoenthusiaste Like what you're doing. Good suggestions above. Lower your art so the centers are 60" above the floor. Would rather see the round hassock/stool in front of the sofa and the ottomans under the window in place of the bench which I would eliminate. Restyle your shelves leaving 1/3 open, 1/3 books and 1/3 decor items.

gcarb1 Love all your responses. Putting the ottomans under the window and eliminating the bench, I'm going to try that, and more colorful art hung properly. Very excited to play with all these ideas! Thank you all.

gcarb1 Yes, the throw on the sofa is for the grandkids, the sofa does look much better without it.

Mark I would get new cabinetry below the TV. Flat-panel ones with low-profile hardware. Either in a bright subtle/neutral color OR darker brown with repainted wall behind it.

And then entirely remove all shelving around the TV. You could keep some books on top of the cabinetry. It may not be an option though, if you have no other place to store the books.

Getting an actual coffee table as some suggested sounds like a good idea to me. I love glass, but it's understandable if that is not an option for you. If you decide to continue using ottomans, I'd opt for a single rectangle one rather than 2 small ones; either darker or brighter than that mid-brown (I don't like mid-browns like that, but of course that may just be me :).
