Said goodbye to the 1990's!
Our kitchen was in need of a major update. We built the house in 1994, and my kitchen walls had seen a variety of "what was I thinking" moments - starting with the grapes stenciled along the border, only to be covered by the lavendar and teal southwestern motiff wallpaper - that was supposed to look like faux finish paint. The linoleum floors lived through 2 dogs, 3 cats and two sons, and had seen much better days. And it was hard to believe I could not wait to say good bye to the oak cabinets and teal countertop that I was so excited to have back in 1994 - the doors were falling apart and the finish was badly worn. We decided to have the cabinets refaced rather than totally replaced - I don't think it saved us any money, but it did save us the additonal mess of tearing them out, and the time it would take to totally replace them. I selected white mdf for the kitchen cabinets and black for the island that replaced our kitchen table and chairs. My husband did the hardwood floors, all of the painting and we did the backsplash together. Our countertops are Cambria Minera and Cambria Bellingham. We added a new "hutch" style cabinet and boxed in the refridgerator by changing the upper and lower cabinets to another pantry. Very happy with how it all turned out!

Dianne Ward Looks great, I am in the process of updating my 1993 kitchen. Love the color of your cabinets, do you have stained woodwork in the rest of the house? I want to paint my light oak cabinets a soft creamy white, but all the trim in the kitchen and rest of the house is stained.

julie77777 bdjjhill - You said you used cabinet re-facing? You ordered factory-painted white MDF doors? How are the rest of the cabinets finished (frames, boxes, stiles)? Did the company re-face them also? Or did you paint the frames/boxes yourselves? You mentioned your hubby did some painting. Thanks!

Lux Construction Nice project; for my eye getting rid of oak cabinets is always a step in the right direction!

bdjjhill @julie - we had our cabinets refaced by a contractor - basically you take all the doors off, and just use the "box" - they laminiate the outside of the front of the boxes and added finished panels to the ends. My husband did our floors, and we did the backsplash and all the painting (walls) - adding a few more pictures to show you what I mean. @diane - we do have stained trim, and it is slowly being painted - after much discussion (I had to beg my husband to paint it!) it is taking 4 coats to cover! You can see that some of the doorways are still stained.....work in progress!
