Exterior House and Roof Color Ideas
We need help with choosing exterior color and roof color for our 2 story house on a corner lot. There are really no features like detailed trim, or shutters, but lots of windows, and a unique shape (some friends call it a ship), I'm looking for ideas on what might work on a fairly large surface. There is bit of teal color (soffits, eavestroughs and doors). I don't mind this color, but my husband does not. The narrow trim around the windows is a dull taupe grey. We are getting the roof done first and then selecting the exterior color. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

handymam Wow, that is one beautiful house! I actually like it just the way it is...Do you have apreference for the roof color?

judyg This is pretty. White stucco with what looks like BM Nantucket Fog. Has your stucco every been painted? If not, I would leave it as is, match up a BM color and look for trims.

I like it the way it is…maybe a different hand rail color.

debheb We are in Canada (northren Alberta), so most of the time the surroundings are white. I'll try to add a winter photo. I do not have a roof color preference, not black, but leaning to a warmer neutral

handymam I would go with a burnt sienna color for trim, and leave the house as it is. A medium tone brown, gray mix textured roof. I would paint the steps a brick color. I am basing all of this on the fact that you do live with white so much of the year. :)

SPACIALISTS Hi debheb,
Here are a few color samples hope these spark some ideas.

debheb Thanks for all the ideas. The different roof colors provide great visual perspectives. Interesting that everyone likes the yellow color. We thought it was time for a change, but we also keep coming back to the yellow.

misecretary What a fantasic place place. I love your house. Had to laugh at myself though because I didn't realize it was yellow until I looked at pictures 2,3,4. So I guess I vote for the taupe color I originally thought it was.

handymam You know misecretarry, I thought the house was a taupe color too and that is why I said I would leave it. But knowing now it was actually yellow, I would change it to a light taupe/putty color.

ASVInteriors If you are in white (snow) a lot of the time, I think handymam's suggestion for taupe is a great idea - it sets off the winter colours in the same way that aged trees look grey/silver against the snow. It is subtle without being overbearing

The Color People The stucco looks tired and kind of glum. You could use a similar color but a little warmer. It will help is the color you choose works with the gray windows so they are part of the scheme. White is always harsh and tends to jump off the landscape especially in a northern clime. In Alberta a house will always feel better if it is warm. The trim would be best staying lighter so the whole house works as one. A Dark trim will separate from the whole. That goes for a bright color as well as you can see now.

As for the roof a dark color will always look better. Most manufacturers make a grayed dark brown often called bark wood or some such. There is also a similar color but much redder. Do not use that one. A charcoal roof will make the house feel cold and you don't need that in northern Alberta.
