Help me figure out size of built in hutch, please!
We're in the midst of a kitchen overhaul & have decided to add a built-in hutch on a 10-foot wall. The kitchen designer suggested a 90-inch unit, but it seems soo big, just too large. She also suggested having one end of the hutch up against the wall, as opposed to centering the piece on the wall (to anchor the room, she said.) What size hutch seems right on a 10-foot wall, and what would a good configuration be? I like the idea of having room on either side of it. Thanks in advance for advice and insight.

rawketgrl Without any additional information I will refer to the“two-thirds to one thirds” rule. To the human eye the proportions and scale of 2:3 is generally accepted as optimal. With that rule you would need an 80 inch unit.

However I am not there and kitchens are strange places where sometimes scale and proportion get wacky. Maybe tape a mock up made out of cardboard or something and see what you think.

Also consider the function of the space. I have a hutch in my dining room and I store an extra kitchen chair on each side when they are not being pressed into service. If you are not going to use that space for anything then a bigger unit might be better depending on your need for space, use, function etc.

Congrats on the new kitchen! :D

Ironwood Builders Rawket is closen the two thirds/one third. The "Golden Section" is the best division. Use Wikipedia and look it up! Too much to go into here!
