New home, new to decorating
Hubby and I are about to move in to our first house. I'm stumped on furniture/rug/coffee table choices (ie wood colour, or not wood, shape for the tables, etc) for the living room with our beautiful Brazilian cherry wood floors. Our computer desk will also be going in the living room (near the fireplace). Picture is what the sellers currently have in there.

libradesigneye Could you go look over on a website like Art.com and see what kind of art draws you / what you love? Or start an idea book here at Houzz with rooms you really like? What do you have now that you need to work around?

This room is somewhat traditional, but that can look great with a contemporary look.

Sherri Fitzgerald It also would be good to know what your decorating style is....Modern....Contemporary....traditional....????

Jayme Hobbs Also, are you leaving the paint the same color it is now? Give us an idea of your style, colors, preferences, etc.

Ren Ghariani Yes, we're leaving the paint colours as they are.

Ren Ghariani I'm sorry, I'm a total decorating newbie. I've never had to do it before, so I'm not sure what my "taste" is. I do know I like things to look clean and neat, not cluttered, so maybe more modern? But I want it to feel homey, too. Not too cold. Does that hep at all? I like the second picture above called "family room addition" I have NO idea what I like for art... sorry!

Sherri Fitzgerald A good idea for you would be to go to the Houzz home page and look at popular rooms. Start an ideabook with your favorite pictures. You could post the ideabook here and interior decorators like myself will have an idea of where to start to help you. The picture you liked above is a contemporary style...so try searching for contemporary rooms first. When it gives you the option to make a note about the things you like in the picture write a brief comment.like....wall color or curtains etc...

libradesigneye Ren, one note is that the color on your walls is a pale muted aqua - a shade of blue that has a little green in it. If you went to the paint store and got a shade card it would range from what is often called spa blue, through aqua, turquoise, teal and peacock. When you purchase blue accent items, or fabrics or pillows, pay attention to the shade of blue and make sure it is in the aqua family rather than the true blue / sky blue family. Your result will be more cohesive. In the very pale colors, you often can't see the distinction / it is less of an issue, but for the others, it matters.

The style of the photo like above is often described as transitional - it has some contemporary lines, and some traditional elements. There, the architecture is traditional and the furnishings are more current / updated versions of classics. You probably gravitate towards furniture retailers like Room & Board, Crate & Barrel. To use their time wisely, some research on Houzz will help them really give you something wonderful for you.

You may want to consult with a professional - it is definitely worth the $ in the way your space will feel and function. Good luck and congratulations on your beautiful new residence.

ukantok2 It sounds like your decorating taste is "transitional" a gentle combination of modern and traditional. It has clean lines, airy spaces, and homey touches. This also uses a lot of neutral colors but has textures.
