Expected cost for pouring a patio
We are contemplating replacing our dilapidated deck with a patio that eventually will become a screened in area. We have to do it in steps in order to avoid getting a loan. The dimensions would be 16X22 and it will be raised about 2 feet with block. We got one estimate that so far surpassed my expectations that I decided before we move to the next estimate I would see what is a reasonable expectation. If someone could just give me a ballpark number, it would help me make a decision whether or not to settle for a fixed deck or make a move forward.

feeny I don't have an estimate for you, but get 3 or 4 quotes and then check reputations. When we put in a concrete driveway with tinting in the concrete, we were stunned by the differences in prices quoted.

lammyfarm We were going with a general contractor whom we know. He estimated $10,000.00. It would be raised 2 feet from the ground and have 2 steps down from the door. I was expecting at least half that amount. Is my reality that far off base?

Norm Walters Construction Inc. It sounds like a stem wall, in which case a footer would have to be poured, the block laid, the interior filled with fill dirt and compacted, then the slab poured on top of that.

Darzy We had a concrete patio poured for our courtyard last summer. It was $6.00 per square foot. No staining tho, but did decorative border and "salt finish". We are in N. California.

Norm Walters Construction Inc. It's more than just a slab folks.

lammyfarm Would a slab with more steps down be less expensive?

Norm Walters Construction Inc. It would be more, because it would require more fill. The reason they are using blocks it to get the elevation. You have to pour a footing for the blocks first because you just can't set them on dirt. Then imagine what you have at that point would be similar to a cardboard box filled with dirt, THEN the concrete slab is poured on that.

Darzy Oh...thx Norm. Yep, ours is just a slab with walkway to driveway. Why would you want a raised concrete patio? I'm confused.

Norm Walters Construction Inc. To match the elevation of her home?

Norm Walters Construction Inc. That's why asking who paid what is irrelevant, as you are not comparing apples to apples which usually the case on every project.

lammyfarm Thanks everyone. I think I am going to have to make a change in my design. I know we can make this work for half of what a concrete porch would cost. I will get there. I always do. :) I appreciate each of you for the words of advice and the insight.

Darzy Norm...isn't it like going around your *ss to get to your elbow to do a raised concrete patio to match the elevation? Wouldn't it make more sense to to do a raised floor? Or, do a concrete pad and step down to the patio?

Norm Walters Construction Inc. Absolutely Darzy, you just have figure out whose idea it was to spec. it that way, it wasn't mine. I was merely explaining the scope of work for the plan as presented.

Twisted Minds Custom Designs I don't know where you are located, but if you plan on enclosing this patio in the future and it is attached to the house, you will need to dig frost footings regardless of if you raise the pad or step down to ground level. Check your local city hall code department for the local rules and regulations regarding the permits and acceptable building practices for your project. And it is always a good idea to get 3 bids on ant project, just make sure that you are comaparing apples to apples, and it is being constructed to proper codes.
