Otherwise it can all look like an undifferentiated dark space. But here is a black kitchen that kept the black appliances but went light with all the other surfaces:

Too dark and too light are relative terms. Every individual responds differently to colors. I love dark, rich colors because they help me to relax (I'm a very high energy person) and slow down. My daughter, on the other hand, is very calm and introspective so she loves crisp whites and bright colors to cheer her up and energize her. Your home should be decorated according to what you love.

But, I would encourage you to rethink your wall color current wall color. A lighter wall color would provide a nice contrast and help lighten up the kitchen.
