While it often comes as an afterthought when it comes to purchasing art or printing photographs, a poor frame can quickly make or break an artistic display. A frame becomes a part of the arrangement just as much as the actual art itself — and a bad decision style-wise can make all the difference.

Naturally, sizing is vital. Deciding on whether or not you want to include a mat in the frame is a matter of personal preference. But if you do include a mat, try to give your photo or artwork breathing room, without letting them drown in a sea of white. If you opt to go without a mat, just make sure that your photo or artwork is the exact size of your frame — you don’t want to have any of the unattractive cardboard backing showing, or have to trim any of the art itself.

When it comes to style, think about what is going to be inside the frame. Make sure the style of the art or photograph complements the style of the frame itself. Consider texture, colors, and material. You want the your frame and photo or artwork to work well together, and the frame itself serves to enhance the art. If you’re stuck between two choices, simpler is always better.
